How to Create Shiny, Realistic Button Badges in Photoshop

In this step-by-step tutorial I will show you how to easily create shiny, realistic, 3d button badges using multiple lightning, shadow and opacity effects. Each step is described very detailed so you will not have problems even if you are a beginner in Photoshop.

Final Result:

Step 1: Create a new canvas

The first step is to create a new canvas (image), I will make it 648px x 480px, but you can use any size, it`s up to you. I`we also filled the background with black (from Edit -> Fill...), but again it`s not necessary, it will not affect the button badge, but I think it looks better with a dark background.

Step 2: Draw a circle

Create a new layer (Layer -> New -> Layer...) and the select the ellipse tool:
Now with the ellipse tool draw a perfect circle in the middle of your image:

Step 3: Add gradient to the badge

By adding a radial gradient with a low opacity (around 35%) we can make the badge look curved, not simply flat... To apply a gradient right click your layer and click Blending Options...

And the result:

 And the result:

Step 4: Make it look 3D by adding satin

To make out badge look three-dimensional first we will add a satin effect with an opacity of 35%, a distance of 5px and a size of 15px and with a special contour and a white color and with blend mode set to overlay:

And the result:

 And the result:

Step 5: Add an inner shadow

Now we will apply an inner shadow to make the badge look more realistic and 3D. At this step we will add an inner shadow with a distance of 10px and size of 25px, opacity of 35px and an angle around -130 (from the bottom left side):

And the result:

 And the result:

Step 6: Add an inner glow

As you can see the inner shadow is important, but we need more of it. To add more inner shadows we will add an inner glow with a black color, with and opacity around 50%, size of 20px and range of 60% and with blend mode set to multiply:

And the result:

 And the result:

Step 7: Add a shadow

In this step we will ad a shadow, an on outer shadow to increase the 3d effect. We well add a shadow with opacity of 20%, distance of 10px and size of 3px and a grey color (not black because the background is black and it won`t be visible):

And the result:

 And the result:

Step 8: Add lights

Now we will ad 2 spots of light, one on the upper right side and one, smaller on the left bottom side. To do so first we need to create a new layer, like in step 2 and with the ellipse tool, like in step 2 and draw something like this:
Now move and rotate (press Ctrl T) the new layer until you get it in the following position:
Now open the Blending Options... menu of the new layer and add a Gradient overlay with the following settings:
Next we need to set the gradient color from white to transparent: click the Gradient (that colored line bellow the opacity) and then select the second type of gradient from the list at the top of the new window and click the two colored squares at the bottom of the gradient line and select the white color for both:
And next go to Blending Options: Custom and set the opacity to 50% and the fill opacity to 0%:

And the result:

 And the result:

Step 9: Add an image to the badge

The final step: We need to add an image to the badge. To add an image first we need to delete that blue (or what color was selected in your Photoshop) color from our badge, to delete it open the Blending Options menu of the layer and set the fill opacity to 0% (just like in the previous step, but now we will leave the opacity at 100%). After this step your image will look like this:
Now chose and image to use for the badge, I will use this one from www.clipartof.com :
Open the image what you have choosed (File -> Open...) than go to Select -> All, this will select your image than go to Edit -> Copy and close this image. On our badge image go to Edit -> Paste and in the layer palette make sure to move the new layer bellow each other layer but upper than the background:

And the result:

 And the result:
Resize (press Ctrl T) and move your image to position it to fit the badge:
Now we need to cut the image to fit the badge. To do this hold down Ctrl and click the badge layer on your layer palette, this will highlight the badge with a round, dashed selection line. Next select your image layer and go to Select -> Inverse and press Delete. And the badge is ready!

I just finished this tourtial and I love the results, again your lighting and gradients are awesome. I must say extracting a green dress from the green background took a bit of time but, I really don`t mind. I decided to paint my hair in strand by strand, yeah totally labor intensive, but I figure you gotta practice sometime, right? Thanks so much for another wonderful tut. I know you must be super busy, but I appreciate you taking the time to teach, your quite good at it!
